Desciption

The Kwale District and Mombasa Mainland South Regional Development Plan is a long-term plan intended
to suggest a spatial framework for development of the region for a period of 30 years. It articulates
the aims of the Government of Kenya, local authorities and the citizens of Kwale and Mombasa Mainland
South. It also proposes strategies and policies intended to achieve those aims. The mandate to prepare the
plan derives from the provisions of the Physical Planning Act Cap 286 of the Laws of Kenya.
The Plan has been prepared in the context of the global goal of sustainable human settlement development
in an urbanizing world and Millennium Development Goals, 2000. It employs a participatory
approach to planning in appreciation of the local aspirations and resource realities and consists of the
written statement and graphical representation of the existing and proposed spatial structure. The following
paragraphs are an exposition of the mission statement, problem statement, vision, objectives,
methodology and the policy and legal context that set the stage for the rest of the document.

The Project was undertaken  at the East African Portland Cement Company’s Athi River factory from 28th June 2013 to 30th June 2013.

The Project was commissioned by the Stores Department at the EAPCC and it's objective   was to determine the mass in tonnes, of all the cement raw materials eg. Limestone, Pozzolana, Gypsum, Bauxite, etc. at the plant’s storage yard  as at 30th June, 2013 for Finacial Reporting.

To be able to obtain the mass of the raw materials, volume measurements were carried out using two Survey techniques:

  • GPS operating on Real Time Kinematic mode
  • Total Station operating both with a reflector, and in some instance on the reflector less mode.

MicroSurvey CAD and Arc GIS softwares were used in volume computations.

The East African Portland Cement Company in its endeavour to check and validate its raw materials in each year,  commissions a quarterly stock taking exercise at its Athi River factory.

The 3rd Quater Stock taking Project was undertaken  at the East African Portland Cement Company’s Athi River factory from 28th June 2013 to 30th June 2013 by the Geospatial and Space Technology Department. The Project was procured through the University of Nairobi Enterprise Service (UNES).

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In this report, a survey of five selected small hydro power (SHP) schemes (< 10MW) is
presented. The purpose of the survey was to establish the status of existing SHP as an input in the development of standards. Three community based schemes Kabiru, Unilever Tea company hydropower scheme and Wanjii generating station run by KenGen were surveyed. A Technical Commitee has been constituted to develop Kenyan Standards for Pico Micro-hydro & small hydro stations.

The proposed Kavunyalalo irrigation development project is located in the Coast Province, Malindi District.  The project is about 20km from Malindi town.  Kavunyalalo irrigation development lies within the Sabaki/Athi River floods plain at the lower reaches of the River. It’s one of the project earmarked in the 1992 water master plan potential irrigation area.

 
Title:ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT STUDY REPORT FOR THE PROPOSED NGONG SOUTH WIND POWER FARM

Introduction

PRUNUS ENERGY SYSTEMS LTD has secured a concession from the Kenya Forestry Service (KFS) for approximately 300 ha of land (actual project area 100-150 hectares) in Ngong South Forest to erect a 50 MW Wind Power Project.  The site is situated approximately 8km South of Ngong Town.  The project will comprise of up to 25 turbines  (2 MW Vestas 80 turbines) mounted on 67 metres high towers supported by the necessary  electrical power generation and transmission infrastructure for such a project.  The proposed project is in line with the Energy Act of 2006 which, amongst other national objectives, provides  for the development of renewable energy and the Forests Act 0f 2005 which makes provisions for Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) in the sustainable development of Protected Areas (PAs) under the jurisdiction of the Kenya Forest Service.

Water has become increasingly inaccessible to a vast majority of people in the world today.  The 3rd World Water Forum1 observed that the demand for water is increasing at an exponential rate relative to the world’s population growth rate and poverty is the most significant factor that interferes with meeting that demand.  Challenges arising from lack of access to water cut across societies.  According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 2.2 million diarrhoea deaths related to unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene every year.  Those at greatest risk of waterborne disease are infants and young children, people who are debilitated or living under unsanitary conditions and the elderly.

 
Title:Sustainable Buildings Policies in Developing Countries

The SPOD Project aims to create the capacity for countries to establish a policy foundation for mainstreaming sustainable construction of building, resulting in reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and to assist developing countries in efforts of poverty alleviation, social equity and economic prosperity. SPOD will provide a Quick-Scan Tool  (hereinafter referred to as "QST") for government to evaluate relevant policy measures according to existing barriers and opportunities at national and local level.  The Project will also develop Policy Building Blocks (hereinafter referred to as "PBB"), which consists of tools and methodologies to design and employ the most suitable sustainable building policy tools.  The Quick-scan tool and policy building blocks will be tested and verified in the two pilot locations, Nairobi Kenya and Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso).  The outputs of the project will be disseminated through an innovative strategy of partner networks.
